How this site incorporates effective practices for instructional design

The site incorporates the "learner control principle of multimedia learning." The learner control principle argues that learners learn better when they have the opportunity to review materials that meet their own needs by selecting and sequencing content themselves rather than forcing the learner to view all materials as well as ordering the content in a specific way. Because “Low Carbs on the Go” is a website, this allows users to easily pick and choose which content will be viewed and the order in which it will be consumed via hyperlinking the materials.

The site also utilizes the segmenting principle which breaks content into manageable chunks of content. The website provides the opportunity for learners to move through the material at their own pace. The pages of the website are chunked by category to allow them to move through the material at the pace that is right for them. In particular, the recipes page, which contains a rather long list of recipes, is broken down and categorized by the type of dish. This segments the material so it is presented into manageable chunks to help organize the material and allows the user to focus on just a few recipes at a time.

Finally, the site also uses the multiple text integration principle by providing a resources section where learners have the opportunity to learn about low-carb diets from other sources. Learners learn about a topic more deeply when they read and connect material from multiple sources. Cross-reference linking refers to the associations that learners make among multiple sources. To promote cross-referencing, the website contains a page with links to external resources. The resources section contains links to articles, videos, blogs, and tools to help learners better understand and implement low-carb diets into their lifestyle.
